You can't see or smell radon, but long-term exposure to this radioactive gas is the top cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
Monitor for cancer-causing radon gas using the AirThings Digital Radon Monitor. Uses Alpha Spectrometry. LCD screen displays the average daily, weekly and long term concentrations of radon (long-term monitoring is necessary as radon levels fluctuate daily). Powered by 3 standard AAA batteries (not included).
Patrons in good standing who are 18+ may borrow this equipment. The loan period is 3 weeks with the option for renewal if there are no holds.
For the most accurate result, monitoring should be done over several months. The best time of year to test is when our windows close between Fall and Spring, so less fresh air is circulating. Borrowing a monitor from BMPL for 3 weeks allows enough time for an indication that a home or building has a concerning level of radon and for our community to follow the next steps identified on the Health Canada and Take Action on Radon sites.
