Fraud is on the rise globally.
Imposter scams were most prevalent, but investment scams cost the typical victim the most money. Fraud is often at its most virulent during downturns and crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Automation makes it easier for criminals to exploit users’ accounts while remaining undetected themselves, increasing the risk of fraud.
Last year the RCMP reported that, that 2021, was a historic year for financial losses reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC).
