A Book Review by Ian Belov.
Packed with action, this book tells the story of how a thirteen-year-old Matt builds a cabin in the woods with his father. Matt's father leaves to get the rest of their family, and the boy has to survive in the woods all alone with only a gun for supplies. And after his gun gets stolen, he can't even hunt for food, and his situation gets worse. Matt goes on to meet Indians, and from learns some of their tricks. He even made an Indian friend... but Matt's father and his family are very late, and Matt's left wondering if they will ever return at all...
This book is a great insight on the Native's culture and how they lived, such as the signs that they put on trees, and the different tribes, the games they play, the food they cook, the way they hunt, their ways of survival, and other similar aspects. There is quite a lot of history from that time period that you can learn. I also like the way that Matt is faced with problems and the way he faces them. This book shows a completely different idea of the forest – not just some trees growing there, but a completely different world that you can actually live in.
I really enjoyed reading this book because of the way it was written – the author holds your attention throughout the book, making you want to find out what happens next. I give this book five stars.
