Hocus Pocus: Broomstick Workshop

Get ready for a little Halloween magic at the library! 

Join us at the L.E. Shore Library as Wendy Tomlinson from the Métis Nation of Ontario leads a fun, hands-on, multigenerational program just in time for Hallow’s Eve. Together, we’ll craft our very own witch’s broom—perfect for a bit of spooky season flair!

 All materials are provided, and no experience is needed—just bring your creativity (and maybe your best cackle ).

LAST DAY: Write @ Your Library Creative Writing Contest

Attention young writers! The 2026 Write @ Your Library creative writing contest is seeking submissions of poems and short stories from students in grades 7 through 12 from across Grey and Bruce Counties. Submissions are also being sought for the cover design of the 2026 anthology.

Winning entries will receive cash prizes of up to $100 and have their work published in the Write for 2026 anthology. Email submissions to tfeick@library.osngupl.ca by Friday, October 23, 2026.

Contest Rules and Guidelines
All entries must be submitted electronically via email to tfeick@library.osngupl.caSubmissions must be sent as an editable attachment (not PDF). If you do not receive acknowledgement of your submission within five business days, please contact 519-376-6623 ext. 5217. Please do not inquire about your entry before that time has passed. The Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library reserves the right to reproduce and publish entries. The Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library reserves the right to alter the typeface, font size, and layout for publication in Write for 2026. Some grammatical and punctuation errors may be corrected, but no content changes will be made. All entries must include within the body of the email the following information about the entrant: full name, address, phone number, grade level, library name, and library card number. All entrants must hold a valid library card for one of the participating libraries. The Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library reserves the right to verify library membership. All entries must be the author’s own work and previously unpublished. All characters must be the author’s creation. Fan fiction or AI generated work will not be considered. If submitting a front cover design, it must fit on a 5.5” x 8.5” piece of paper. The only words should be “Write for 2026”, which must be included in the design.  Poems may be a maximum of 50 lines in length. No more than 5 poems may be submitted per author. Short stories may be a maximum of 1,500 words in length. No more than 2 stories may be submitted per author. The decisions of the judges are final. Winners will be notified by email or phone. Meet us in the Story Tower at L.E. Shore Library for a fun and interactive Story Time on Fridays at 11:00am. Join us for stories, rhymes, movement, songs, and lots of FUN! Ages 0-5 and their caregivers. Siblings and older children welcome. Drop-in.

Kids Can Sew: Cozy Sweater Socks

Kids Can Sew is Back!

This November, we’re getting creative and giving old sweaters a brand-new life! Kids will learn some basic hand-sewing skills while transforming an old sweater into their very own cozy pair of slipper socks.

All supplies are provided, so just bring your creativity and get ready to sew!

Spaces are limited, so be sure to register early!

Please note: Children will be using a real needle during this program. Ages 9+ are encouraged.
