Community Builders ‘Pay It Forward’ at the Blue Mountains Public Library
The Blue Mountains Public Library is piloting a new online directory called Community Builders and is looking for volunteers who are passionate about sharing their skills with others who want to pay it forward. The program is designed to provide people with opportunities to learn and grow, whether they wish to advance in their careers, learn a new hobby, or gain practical knowledge.
“This pay it forward initiative is a bit of an experiment and has been years in the making,” says Mary Dodge, Manager of Community Engagement. “The idea came directly from the community during consultation for the Library’s Strategic Plan and there was a natural connection between what we heard and what we do: we are the place where you can connect, explore, and create.”
The Community Builders program is designed to foster both learning and social connections. Whether you want to master the art of tying a tie, breathing techniques to reduce stress, or acquire basic home maintenance and repair skills, there is something for everyone. This program is especially beneficial for folks eager to pick up a new skill or hobby, or those who may not have had the opportunity to learn these skills from family or peers.
“There are so many talented and generous people in the Town of The Blue Mountains, we meet them every day, and now we are giving them a platform to network and help neighbours upskill,” Dodge says.
