Solar eclipse glasses with an eclipse in the background

Solar Eclipse Glasses Giveaway

The Blue Mountains Public Library is giving away ISO 12312-2 certified solar eclipse glasses in preparation for the solar eclipse on April 8. These glasses meet global safety standards and when used correctly, protect your eyes when viewing the solar eclipse.

Glasses are available at L.E. Shore Library and Craigleith Depot starting Friday,  April 5 until supplies last. Because supplies are limited, we are giving away one pair of glasses per household. The glasses must be picked up by an adult, responsible for supervising the use of the eclipse glasses at all times.

When is the solar eclipse? The solar eclipse will happen on Monday, April 8, 2024. The Blue Mountains is not in the path of the total eclipse, but the partial eclipse will start at 2:04pm, the mid-point of the eclipse will be at 3:19pm., and the eclipse will end at 4:30pm.

What is a solar eclipse?A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the Sun’s light in some areas. This only happens occasionally, because the Moon doesn't orbit in the exact same plane as the Sun and Earth do.

How do I experience the solar eclipse safely? In Blue Mountains, we will not witness a total solar eclipse. That means that no one should look at the Sun without protection during any part of the eclipse.

Never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection. During any solar eclipse looking at the sun can result in damage to your retina and eyesight impairment due to solar UV and IR radiation. Use solar viewing glasses or solar filters on telescopes/binoculars to observe the eclipse safely. Regular sunglasses will not provide enough protection. Do not move around or operate a vehicle while using solar viewing glasses. Do not use solar viewing glasses if  the protective lenses have detached, or are scratched or punctured. Do not use solar viewing glasses behind other glasses or with other optical devices. Supervise children to ensure they use eye protection and follow safety instructions. Be cautious of counterfeit or damaged solar viewing glasses. Only use glasses that meet international safety standards (ISO 12312-2).
