ACC Presents: Music as Sound and its Effect on Blood, Bone and Brain

Tuesday March 30, 2021

Time: 7:00pm - 8:30pm

Location: Webinar.

We usually encounter music and research about music without considering music merely as sound - the way a cat might hear it. But when you look at music as rhythmic or pulsed waves of compressed molecules and how these interact with your mind and body you get a surprising perspective - and hard to understand responses.

Join Lee Bartel, PhD, Professor Emeritus, former Associate Dean of Research, and Founding Director of the Music and Health Research Collaboratory (MaHRC) at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto.

This talk will clarify a model of response to music and pulsed stimulation and how it can affect us from a psychological level to a cellular level. It will then look specifically at how sound vibration is translated to a response in the body and brain. Clinical treatments and research will be described how these cellular level effects are applied in conditions like pain, stroke, Alzheimer’s, spinal alignment, bone density, circulation, depression, etc.

My Summer of Glorious Freedom: An Author Talk with Robert Burcher

Tuesday April 13, 2021

Time: 7:00pm - 8:00pm

Location: The Blue Mountains Public Library Zoom.

Local photographer and historian, Robert Burcher, will be discussing John Muir and his most recent book "My Summer of Glorious Freedom: John Muir Saunters Around Sothern Ontario in the Summer of 1864".

Robert Burcher has been involved with the local John Muir story for the past 30 years. After discovering a plaque in the Epping Lookout in the Beaver Valley that honoured Muir, he was intrigued and started his research. This led to the joining in the 1990’s of a group called The Canadian Friends of John Muir in Meaford. They worked to discover the cabin and mill site where Muir lived and worked during his two years in Canada. Since 2001, Robert has worked to discover the missing link of how Muir arrived in Meaford. It is an incredible forensic style research story following a trail of botanical specimens collected by John Muir in the summer of 1864, “The Summer of Glorious Freedom”.

Registrants will receive a Zoom invitation after registration closes before the event. If you have unreliable internet or no internet, you can still participate in this event via phone.
